Idea List : Downtown Skating Rink

Downtown Ludington, MI: After discovering a synthetic ice product that allows the creation of skating rinks that are not weather dependent, the Downtown Ludington Board has been looking into options for how to make this project happen. Changes in this year’s holiday events brought the idea back to the surface.

“This year we’ve eliminated the Ladies and Guys Shopping Night events and moved into a promotion we’re calling The 12 Days of Christmas Shopping,” states Jen Tooman, Downtown Ludington Communication and Marketing Manager, “In an effort to create a small-town holiday atmosphere that will attract families to downtown Ludington to #ShopSmall, the businesses themselves came up with this idea to host their events during the twelve days before Christmas giving people more that just two shopping night events.”

Events during that promotion include open houses, Christmas crafts, Santa visits, caroling and an online contest where five random people will be drawn of those who post photos of products from Downtown Ludington retailers on Facebook and Instagram using the hashtag #LudingtonWishList. Winners will receive $100 in Downtown Ludington gift certificates thanks to event sponsor West Shore Bank. Follow the hashtag to get gift ideas that can be found downtown.

To help fill those twelve days with family-friendly activities, the DDA Marketing Committee has been coming up with ideas that will make being downtown a fun experience and the ice rink is at the top of that list. Currently, the Marketing Committee is seeking pledges for $500 sponsorships to cover the cost of purchasing the skating rink. The sponsorship would include a 7.5′ x 3′ logo banner that will cover one of eighteen barricades that would be used to fence the ice rink. If enough support is received the idea will be presented to the DDA Board for approval at the November 5th board meeting. If the board approves and appropriate funds can be raised, the rink could be installed in time for the promotion on December 13th and would remain open – free of charge – through the winter.
