Idlewild Documentary on Wednesday July 7 at the Ludington Area Center for the Arts
LUDINGTON – The Third Coast Film Society will be showing the film, Whatever Happened to
Idlewild on Wednesday, July 7 at 7 pm. This documentary, produced by Coy Davis explores Idlewild,
Michigan. Located just east of Baldwin in Lake County, this African-American resort was founded in
1912. During the 1940’s and 1950’s it played host to black professionals from all over the Midwest.
Primarily lake cottages, hotels, restaurants, and two Las Vegas style night clubs, it hosted legendary
performers such as Louis Armstrong and B.B. King. With the passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964,
Idlewild declined in its number of visitors. Today, it is experiencing a renaissance and has become a
historic vacation and retirement community.
The producer, Coy Davis, will be at the screening to introduce the film, and will hold a discussion
after. In addition, the Idlewild African-American Chamber of Commerce has donated two tickets to the
Idlewild Music Fest that will be drawn at the screening. The festival is in the evenings July 8-10.
Tickets for each film screening are $7 per person at the door. Popcorn and beverages will be
available for sale.
The Film Society’s regular screening the last Friday of each month continues with Buena Vista
Social Club, a documentary about legendary Cuban musicians, on Friday, July 30 at 7 p.m.
